The Portable Peace Project is an offering rooted in the practice of Karma Yoga - the yoga of selfless service. Created by the students of the 2026 Yoga Teacher Training cohort at Community Yoga Center, this project reflects a shared intention to live yoga beyond the mat through compassionate action, mindful presence, and meaningful care for others.

In the yogic tradition, even the smallest acts, when offered with sincerity, awareness, and love, can become sacred expressions of connection. Through this service project, the students sought to embody these teachings not only through personal practice, but through offerings designed to nurture the well-being of those who continually care for others.

As part of this year’s Karma Yoga initiative, the cohort adopted a local middle school in honor of the teachers and staff whose daily work requires extraordinary emotional, mental, and physical generosity. Recognizing the immense dedication it takes to support and guide young people each day, the students wanted to create something that felt both grounding and restorative - a gesture of appreciation that acknowledged the humanity, care, and resilience at the heart of education.

Throughout the development of the Portable Peace Project, the students explored accessible mindfulness practices that could gently support moments of calm, regulation, and reconnection amidst the pace and pressures of everyday life. Each element of the offering was created with intention, inviting recipients to pause, breathe, and return to the present moment through simple sensory experiences.

One part of the project included the creation of hand-crafted grounding stones made from clay during a workshop guided by artist and mentor Inga Buchbinder. Each stone was shaped slowly and intentionally by hand as a mindfulness practice in itself - transforming the act of making into an act of service, care, and quiet devotion. Alongside the stones, the students created a tactile Grounding Stone Practice card offering guidance in using breath, touch, and sensory awareness to support calm and nervous system regulation during moments of overwhelm or fatigue.

The students also created a Peace Pop Practice - a playful and accessible mindfulness invitation centered around taste and presence. Paired with a simple lollipop offering, the practice encourages slowing down, savoring sweetness, and reconnecting to joy through the gustatory senses. Through mindful tasting, breath awareness, and sensory attention, the Peace Pop Practice reminds us that moments of peace and delight can exist even within ordinary daily experiences.

Together, these offerings reflect the heart of Karma Yoga: the understanding that service offered freely and wholeheartedly becomes a practice of love, connection, and shared humanity.

May this Portable Peace Project serve as a gentle reminder that peace is not something distant or unreachable, but something we can continually return to - through breath, awareness, compassion, and small acts of care for ourselves and one another.
